Robbie Beydoun: He Walked Away From Pro Hockey — Now He Trains Nhl Goalies' Eyes (ep. 363)

Episode Description

Episode 363 of the InGoal Radio Podcast, presented by The Hockey Shop Source for Sports, features the fascinating journey of former NCAA goalie turned vision specialist and sometimes NHL practice goalie, Robbie Beydoun. In the feature interview, presented by NHL Sense Arena, Beydoun shares stories from a unique path to college hockey that included graduating in 3 years from Michigan Tech, transferring (long before there was a portal) to Wisconsin to play his final year on a team with Cole Caufield and Dylan Holloway, then turning pro, winning in the AHL and going 7-3 in the ECHL with a save percentage of .920 or better, then walking away at least from playing professionally. Along the way, Beydoun, who still puts on the pads to practice with his hometown Minnesota Wild, had a breakthrough using Vizual Edge, and now he helps goalies see pucks better in his work with the company, a journey that includes working with Jordan Binnington, Jeremy Swayman, Joseph Woll and more. It's a great story that comes with an added bonus: 50% off the first 3 months to try Vizual Edge as a new user in August using the code IGFALL50.In the Parent Playbook, presented by Stop it Goaltending U the App, we cover 7 tips for helping your goaltender improve their puck handling. In that segment we reference an article at InGoalMag.com on improving your shooting strength from Maria Mountain. We also review the latest Pro Reads, presented by Vizual Edge, featuring Eric Comrie with a smart breakdown on managing depth on the penalty kill and the importance of not overcommitting positionally to non-shooting threats, even NHL All-Stars with 358 career goals. And in our weekly gear segment we go to The Hockey Shop Source for Sports for a look at the new CCM Tacks goal skates, with a forward pitch more comparable to Bauer and lots of great new features that have made them a hit with our testers and PWHL star Ann-Renee Desbiens.

our-kids-play-hockey-the-ride-to-the-rink-kevin-clark-on-building-better-hockey-awareness

Episode Description

What separates players who simply react from players who always seem to be one step ahead? In this episode of The Ride to the Rink, former professional hockey player and development coach Kevin Clark joins Lee Elias, Christie Casciano-Burns, and Mike Bonelli to share practical advice that young hockey players can use immediately.Kevin explains why players need a short-term memory, how additional development during the season can create long-term growth, and why scanning the ice before receiving the puck is one of the most valuable habits a young player can build. The goal is not to turn your head just because a coach told you to look around. The goal is to collect useful information. In this episode, young players will learn: Why mistakes and great plays both need to be left behind quickly How to stay focused on the next decision and the next shift Why development should continue during the hockey season How scanning helps players understand where teammates and opponents are Why better information leads to faster, more confident decisions What skaters can learn from the way goalies watch the entire gameKevin encourages players to stop skating with blinders on and begin noticing the full picture around them. The earlier a player develops that awareness, the more naturally it can become part of their game. The next time you step onto the ice, challenge yourself to look, learn, and collect more information before the puck arrives.Listen now, share this episode with a teammate, and put one of Kevins lessons into action during your next practice. rslint-goalie-science-small-goalies-are-not-back-—-what-an-nhl-scouts-document-actually-says

Episode Description

Welcome back to Goalie Science Episode 148. Derek is ready for hockey season. Jamie is running on an iced espresso and white monster combo and fixing up a house he probably shouldn't have bought. Both are ready to get into it. The Talent Code What It Actually Means for Goalie Development Derek came in with notes from the book The Talent Code and broke down what the research actually says about high-level development. Key takeaways for goalies and parents: Talent has to be built. Natural ability is a starting point, not a destination. The 10,000 hour rule has been debunked, but intentional practice deep practice with a purpose is what actually drives development. For goalies specifically, that means getting scored on 20 to 40% of the time during training. If a goalie is making every save in camp, they're not getting better. They need to be challenged at the edge of their ability. Short, specific, immediate corrections from a coach matter more than long explanations. The coach's job is not to run drills that look good on video. The coach's job is to design the struggle. Going out and getting a thousand shots with no feedback is spinning your wheels. Sports Specialization Where the Real Danger Is The conversation isn't about forcing kids out of hockey. It's about not forcing kids to stay in hockey when they want to do something else. Derek let his son miss training sessions to play baseball this summer. That's the model. If the kid loves hockey and wants more, let them have more. If they want to try baseball or soccer, let them. The burnout doesn't come from playing too much hockey. It comes from being in a pressure cooker year-round with no breaks from performing. New skills should not be performance moments. Derek and Jamie both ran RVH sessions this week with U13 goalies. Neither expected them to stop pucks. The shot is the reward for doing the technical movement correctly not the point of the drill. Too many goalie coaches are screaming at kids who are just learning new things. Small Goalies What an NHL Scouting Document Actually Says A client's father works as an NHL scout. After the team brought in a new goalie coach, that coach sent a document to all scouting staff outlining what they're looking for by height category going into the draft. The breakdown: 6'1 and under must be elite at absolutely everything. No exceptions. 6'2 to 6'5 must be an elite puck tracker with very good puck handling ability. Everything else can be taught. 6'5 and up must be an elite puck tracker and able to handle the puck. That's it. Two requirements. This is not an argument against small goalies. It's an honest look at what teams are actually using to evaluate. Dustin Wolf had to win AHL Goalie of the Year twice before Calgary trusted him with a full-time NHL job. Small goalies can absolutely make it they just have to prove it longer and more definitively than taller goalies do. That's the reality. European vs North American Goalie Development One of Ghost's coaches, Coach Dakota, sparked a discussion about why European goalies tend to be more athletic and positionally sophisticated. The theory: European development systems push kids into ball sports earlier handball, racquetball, badminton sports that build lateral movement, hand-eye coordination, processing speed, and angle reading. These skills transfer directly into goaltending. In North America, we push kids into football and basketball more athleticism-based, less skill-based. Goaltending is a skill-based position, not a pure athleticism position. You can be a great goalie without being the best athlete on the ice. The skill of tracking, reading, and positioning drives performance more than raw athletic ability. The other factor: significantly less stigma around youth weight training in Europe. North America still fights the narrative that kids shouldn't lift weights when every scientific study has shown that's false. European programs are putting young athletes into resistance training, Olympic lifting, and plyometrics earlier, building stronger, more powerful goalies long before North American kids get access to the same tools. The Two Sports Every Goalie Should Play Derek's picks: Baseball and a racket sport. Baseball for the mental side every single pitch is a new scenario, you have to update the situation constantly, and learning to stay locked in through a full game teaches goalies to stay mentally sharp through a 60-minute hockey game. Pickleball or racquetball for the physical side rapid change of direction, quick hands, tracking an object at multiple angles. Jamie's picks: Gymnastics at a young age for mobility and body control, then squash or racquetball for change of direction, and track and field decathlon in high school to build genuine athleticism across multiple disciplines. The bigger point: whatever sport keeps a kid active, moving, and having fun outside of a performance pressure environment is the right sport. Road hockey in the backyard counts. Parting Shots Derek gives CCM their first compliment in a long time the new TACKS Pro pad has actually impressed him, with the only grievance being the off-white colourway. Jamie agrees and admits it even as a Bauer-affiliated coach. Both want more interviews. Drop your suggestions in the comments who do you want to hear on Goalie Science? with-the-celebrini-contract-question-answered-focus-shifts-to-next-years-unrestricted-free-agents

Raw Charge

Poor Kirill Kaprizov. Well, not really. He is the exact opposite of poor. However, the Minnesota Wild forward never truly got to enjoy his reign as the top paid player in the NHL. Despite garnering headline after headline last summer with his then record-setting extension that topped out at $17 million per season, he never actually skated a single game as the highest-paid player in the league. Since then he’s seen Leo Carlsson and now Macklin Celebrini surpass him in the salary game. Before the puck drops on the 2026-27 season, will Kaprizov fall even further down the list?

<p>There is a pattern to the off-season. As the Stanley Cup winners revel in drunken celebration the general managers start reworking their rosters at the draft. They do it by selecting the next franchise cornerstone (Gavin McKenna) or slinging some trades around (Mason MacTavish, Sebastian Cossa, Pavel Dorofeyev). Then comes the unbridled gluttony that is unrestricted free agency. Once the fervor over the top available players, there are a few minor signings, but the focus then shifts to the restricted free agents.</p>

<p>This summer had the added drama of a couple of offer sheets (both matched) and some months-long negotiations that resulted in a stop-gap measure (Jason Robertson). There were arbitration hearings scheduled and then cancelled as agreements were made in all fifteen cases that were filed. Sprinkled among those were extensions for some of the top-tier players who had finished up their entry-level deals. Connor Bedard agreed to what now seems to be a reasonable $15 million a season contract and most recently Celebrini ascended to new contract heights with his record-setting, five-season, $18.5 million average annual value deal with the Sharks that kicks in for the 2027-28 season.</p>

<p>For the most part the big name RFAs are now under contract. With all due respect to Cutter Gauthier, Adam Fantilli, and Alexander Nikishin, their new contracts aren&#8217;t going to break any records. They will just have to settle for being multi-millionaires at relatively young ages. </p>

<p>So what comes next? Well, much like thunder follows lightning, the focus shifts to the extension-eligible players. Those players entering the final season of their current contracts who, since July 1, have been able to sign new deals. Tampa Bay Lightning fans are familiar with the situation as they wait patiently for any type of news about Nikita Kucherov. They aren&#8217;t the only fan bases who use every day that goes by without an announcement as &#8220;proof&#8221; that things will end badly. Further west, in Colorado and Minnesota, there are fans not-so-patiently waiting for reports to emerge about Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes respectively. </p>

<p>Much like Kucherov, the two defensemen are set to cash in on lucrative deals. It isn&#8217;t out of the realm of possibility that at least one of them will set a record. Makar probably stands the best chance to set, at the very least, a new high for defensemen. Right now, Erik Karlsson holds the title at $11.5 million per season, but he will be dethroned by Bowen Byram, whose $12.5 million AAV extension (the same money Connor McDavid makes) begins in 2027-28.</p>

<p>Makar will undoubtably top both players as he has the benefit of still being relatively young (27) and really, really good. The Avalanche will do everything they can to keep him in the Mile High City, and that might mean signing him to a deal that lurks near the Celebrini/Kaprizov/Carlsson level. Despite the level of play around him, losing Makar would pretty much erase Colorado&#8217;s chances of winning another Stanley Cup any time soon.</p>

<p>For the Wild, things aren&#8217;t quite so engrained. Hughes has been there less than a season, and while he&#8217;s warmed to the idea of staying in the frozen tundra that is Minnesota, there are other factors, such as playing with his brothers Jack and Luke, that might prevent him from signing a long-term deal, or any type of contract that keeps him in the green and white. Still, Bill Guerin has found ways to get things done, and his owner is <a href="https://www.nhl.com/news/owner-says-minnesota-wild-will-sign-quinn-hughes-to-new-contract">already on record</a> stating that they will re-sign him, the only question lingering is the length of the deal. </p>

<p>The same goes for Kucherov as <a href="https://www.rawcharge.com/delving-into-a-nikita-kucherov-extension-tampa-bay-lightning-free-agency-new-contract/">has been discussed</a>. Much like Hughes, albeit for different reasons, the length of the deal is just as important as the AAV. For Kucherov, it likely centers on how long he wants to keep playing, and if he&#8217;s willing to sign a deal that will take him to the end of his career with the Lightning. </p>

<p>It seems negotiations are ongoing for all three players (and one would assume others such as Pavel Zacha, Alex Debrincat, and Drake Batherson) and once one signs a new deal, it wouldn&#8217;t be surprising to see a few more follow suit. Could it be closer to the beginning of the season like it was last fall when Kaprizov, McDavid, and Jack Eichel all signed deals within basically a week of each other at the end of September/early October (and denying fans an absolutely rip-roaring fun UFA summer in 2026)? </p>

<p>It seems worth noting that Kucherov&#8217;s first &#8220;big&#8221; contact was signed on October 11, 2016. The 23-year-old RFA didn&#8217;t agree to a three-year, $4.76 AAV contract until two days before the season began. So, he&#8217;s no stranger to biding time. And, for all the guff that Julien BriseBois gets for some of the contracts he hands out (and at times deservedly so) he is pretty good at <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7471312/2026/07/29/nhl-contract-efficiency-rankings-2026/">maximizing value</a> out of his roster. </p>

<p>There is no real urgency for any of the players to get a deal done today, tomorrow, or three Thursdays from now. It&#8217;s not going to change how they prepare for the season or how their general managers build their roster. The players have contracts and will report to training camp in just over six weeks time. Perhaps being in closer proximity to each other will help spark some conversations that bring some of these deals to the finish line.</p>

<p>Would it have been less stressful for all of the fan bases if their players had announced new deals at the beginning of July? Of course, but just because the calendar is flipping to August doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s time to abandon hope and hammer down the panic button. The rhythm of the NHL offseason hasn&#8217;t been disrupted just yet. So sit back and relax. </p></p>

our-kids-play-hockey-why-great-hockey-players-know-the-why-with-kevin-clark-of-cascade-hockey

Episode Description

Your child may know what happened during a shiftbut do they understand why it happened?Goals, assists, wins, and losses are easy to see. But the small decisions that build hockey IQ, earn a coachs trust, and help a player advance rarely appear on the score sheet. In this episode of Our Kids Play Hockey, Lee Elias, Mike Bonelli, and Christie Casciano-Burns welcome Kevin Clark of Cascade Hockey, a former professional player whose 16-year career included time in the Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets organizations, along with multiple opportunities to represent Team Canada.Kevin explains how players can learn to view the game through a professional lensand why parents and coaches must stop judging every decision solely by its result.Sometimes a player makes the correct decision and gets a bad outcome. Other times, a poor decision accidentally leads to a goal. The key to long-term development is learning to recognize the difference. In this conversation, youll hear: Why decision quality matters more than the immediate result How players become trusted beyond goals and assists Why practices should recreate the chaos and pressure of real games How coaches can train high-frequency situations instead of relying on predetermined patterns What parents should watch for during their childs shifts Why progress should be measured over monthsnot game by game How intentional feedback gives players confidence, identity, and purpose Why video can help players recognize growth and understand their habits Why feeling uncomfortable can be a sign that real learning is taking place How parents can cultivate a childs drive without trying to manufacture itKevin also shares why young athletes need different coaching voices, how coaches can create safer learning environments, and why the best development programs begin every session with a clear purpose. This episode is an important reminder that a players value cannot always be measured by production. Reliability, awareness, defensive responsibility, communication, timing, and the ability to create time and space can be just as valuable as scoring. Most importantly, every player deserves to understand how they contributeand to feel like they matter.Listen now, share the episode with a hockey parent or coach, and begin looking beyond the box score.
