The NHL Central Scouting final rankings are out. Chris and Cam, as you'd expect, have some thoughts on the way it all shook out. The two discuss the surprises or lack thereof and also take a look further down the list. Plus, you won't want to miss the discussion on the way teams and international federations are trying to stop the flow of players to developmental paths they are competing with. Chris and Cam share their own opinions about how international federations are using national team opportunities as battle grounds to stop player movement. Up next, Chris and Cam discuss the early rosters we've seen for the IIHF U18 Men's World Championship which kicks off next week in Slovakia. This week, we also brought back the Called Up Challenge where Chris and Cam test each other's prospect knowledge with just a few context clues. Plus we talk about David Carle's future, the NCAA coaches that could get NHL nods, plus some NHL Draft prospects that could get the nod for Men's Worlds in our Beyond Belief segment. And lastly, Chris and Cam talk about which superstar teenager they would rather build a team around: Macklin Celebrini and Matthew Schaefer. It's a jam-packed show! Learn more about your ad choices. In episode 332 of the Glass and Out Podcast we're joined by Head Coach of the St. Norbert College Green Knights, Tim Coghlin. Over the past 32 seasons, Coghlin has turned the St. Norbert hockey program into one of the finest college hockey programs in the country. During that time, the Green Knights have appeared in 21 NCAA DIII tournaments, captured five national titles, and posted over 700 wins, making Coghlin the all-time wins leader at the DIII level. In addition to leading a model program, former players can be found making an impact in their respective fields and communities. That includes reigning Jack Adams Award winner and head coach of the Washington Capitals, Spencer Carberry. Listen as he shares why successful teams have noisy benches, why creating offence starts with defensive structure, and the responsiblity that college coaches have to their players' parents. In Episode 347, the season finale of the Glass and Out Podcast, we revisit our conversation with the head coach of the Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes, Rod Brind'Amour. Back in 2019, Brind'Amour was just in his second season as head coach of Carolina and fresh off leading a young Canes team to its first playoff appearance in nine seasons. Fast forward to today, and he is now a Stanley Cup champion as both a player and a coach. This was one of our favourite episodes of all time, and we thought it was the perfect way to honour Brind'Amour and his incredible journey. A special thank you to everyone who tuned in this season. We can't wait to get back at it in September for Season 10! Listen as he shares why it's important to think like a player as a coach, how to get creative when delivering your message, and why coaches should avoid looking in the rearview mirror. Can Montreal claim the top spot in the Atlantic Division, or will the aging Tampa Bay Lightningbolstered by veteran additions like John Carlsonmaintain their edge? Laura Saba and Greg Stephen review the Canadiens goalie tandem involving Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler, assess Kirby Dachs new deal, and debate the long-term outlook for both teams. One Princeton player's path - and why more isn't always better.Recorded on location at Princeton's summer hockey camp, Scott and Jamie sit down with Princeton defenseman Chris Reiniger to talk about the path from Maryland youth hockey to South Kent, the Chicago Steel, and eventually Division I hockey at Princeton.Chris talks candidly about starting hockey late, the sacrifices that nearly made him walk away from the game, and why finding the right environment helped keep his love for hockey alive. He also shares why he never did one-on-one training growing up, prefers competitive group sessions, and believes too much extra hockey can become exactly that...too much. What separates a practice that simply fills an hour from one that actually makes players better?Great practices dont happen by accident. Theyre intentional, connected to the game, and designed around what players truly need to improve. On this episode of Our Girls Play Hockey, Lee Elias, Mike Bonelli, and Olympic gold medalist Hayley Scamurra are joined by Chris Howard of Ice Hockey Systems for a deep dive into what makes hockey practices effectivefrom youth hockey all the way to the professional level.Chris shares how coaches can move beyond simply collecting drills and instead build practices around clear objectives, meaningful competition, player development, and connection to real game situations. And this conversation isnt just for coaches.Players will learn how to become more intentional with every repetition. Parents will hear what they should actually be watching for from the stands. And coaches will walk away with practical ideas for maximizing every precious minute of ice time. In this episode, we discuss: Why every practice should begin with a clear objective Why two or three teaching points may be more effective than trying to fix everything at once How great coaches build progressions instead of constantly chasing new drills Why starting practice with competition can immediately increase engagement How drills should connect skills and decisions to real game situations The role of small-area games, constraints, repetition, and controlled chaos Why coaches should arrive preparedbut still be willing to change the plan How assistant coaches can help maximize teaching and player connection How players can make every repetition different and practice with greater intention Why creating an environment where players are comfortable failing can accelerate development What parents should actually look for when evaluating a practice Why a players excitement to go to the rink may tell you more than anything you see from the stands How Ice Hockey Systems helps coaches organize practices, share drills, use video, and continue their own coaching educationOne of the biggest takeaways?A drill isnt valuable simply because it looks good. Its valuable when it connects to what players need in the game.Whether youre coaching a girls hockey team, supporting your daughter from the stands, or trying to become a more intentional player yourself, this episode will change the way you think about practice. Want a written version you can reference anytime? Check out our companion blog: How to Build Better Hockey Practices: Chris Howard of Ice Hockey Systems on Player Development Listen now, share it with the coaches and hockey families in your community, and ask yourself: Are we simply running drillsor are we developing hockey players?Have a question or want to continue the conversation? After a little bit of an unscheduled break, we are back! A big thank you for everyone who kept things going in the comment section (and with minimal folks getting thrown in jail by the auto-moderators!). Now that we’re back to regular posts (hopefully) we’ll catch up on a few things that have been announced over the last week.

Sadly, an extension for Nikita Kucherov wasn’t one of those, but we’re not at the panic stage just yet. Would be nice if he was under contract, sure, but we’re not in danger of him not showing up for camp at this point. Speaking of camp, the Carolina Hurricanes announced the dates of their Prospect Showcase a couple of days ago. Why is that important? Because, it involves the Lightning!

The joint practice sessions/scrimmages will take place in Raleigh from September 13-15 and feature prospects from the Hurricanes, Lightning, and Nashville Predators. The usual fourth leg to their prospect-showcase table, the Florida Panthers, aren’t participating this season. Why? Probably because they have fewer young players than the Lightning at this point.

The Bolts are schedule to play on Monday against the Predators and then Tuesday against the Hurricanes. Both games will be at 2:00 PM. No broadcast information has been released as of yet, but at the very least, the games are usually streamed on the hosting team’s website. Last year, which was hosted by Tampa Bay, was streamed on their website and broadcast locally on The Spot, Channel 66. Expect the team to release more information, along with their rosters toward the end of August.

There are usually roster restrictions on who can attend these showcases. Last season it was players under 24 who had less than 20 games of NHL experience. Exceptions can be made if all the teams participating agree. The rosters are usually dominated heavily by CHL and younger AHL prospects. The NCAA’s relaxation of eligibility for these showcases might allow the Lightning to bring some college prospects as long as it doesn’t interrupt their off-season schedules.

Expect most of the recent draft picks to show up, and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Benjamin Rautiainen as an exception to the European prospect trend. With the Lightning not ruling him out of possibly earning a spot on the NHL roster, the showcase would be a great spot for him to show what could be done on North American ice.

It’s always interesting to see if the team, which will dress 18 skaters and 2 goaltenders for each game, will fill out the roster with any invitees. Last season, they had two defenseman Maddox Labre and goaltender Anders Miller. Both had been part of their post-draft development camp earlier that summer and are now playing NCAA hockey. Earlier this summer, the Lightning had a handful of invitees, including Patrick Maroon’s son Anthony Thomas-Maroon, as well as goaltender Danick Leroux.

These showcases lead right into training camp, so that means we’re just over a month away from hockey being back in our lives!

Hockey News

With a dearth of Lightning news out there, Jason spoke with Matt Savage of Mission Control Hockey about expansion to Houston on the latest Backchecking the Bolts podcast.

The Big Cat is in town and dropped by on a summer goalie camp hosted by the Lightning. Can’t wait for a kid at this camp to get drafted 10-15 years from now and show a picture they took with Vasilevskiy at this camp.

Look, we love the Big Swede, and we think he’s going to have a pretty good bounce back season. That being said, to put him in the top 20 of NHL defensemen right now is a bit of a stretch (and some serious J.J. Moser erasure).

It’s been three years since Canada won gold at the U20 World Junior Championships. It’s been rough. The good news is that the basis of a future U20 team won gold at the Hlinka Gretzky tournament as Team Canada routed Team USA, 8-1, on Saturday.

No one will wear number 11 in L.A. ever again. No, former Bolts Steve Kelly isn’t getting honored, it’s the guy that has worn it since 2006 – Anze Kopitar. The future hall of famer will see his number raised to the rafters on February 24 prior to the game against the Montreal Canadiens.

The Athletic is writing about the results of their annual fan survey that had over 20,000 responses. On the whole, things are fairly positive, but it’s interesting to see how the game is changing. For one thing, the majority of fans who responded (62%) aren’t concerned about blackouts. Almost half of the fans (48%) stream the games with only 30% ever tuning in on the radio.

Hey, a contract that is just as perplexing as the Jeffrey Viel deal! The Pens decided they needed to lock down their 23-year-old forward to an eight-year, $4 million AAV contract. The contract buys out his first four UFA seasons and he is now the only Penguin on the roster signed past the 2029-30 season.

We are down to the final day of rankings for the 2026 Top 20 Under 25. If you haven’t gotten around to it, today would be an excellent day. Submissions will be open until 11:00 PM EST.

When I told Scott and Jamie from the Crazy Hockey Dads podcast that I recommend just 10 minutes of stickhandling for kids, they looked at me like I was crazy. Too short. Not enough work. Half of it is rest, for crying out loud. But here's the thing: the best training is the training that actually gets done. In this episode, I break down why shorter, focused sessions beat longer ones every time. We get into the psychology of habit-building, why kids can't focus for 30 minutes straight (and why we shouldn't ask them to), and how 10-minute sessions actually create momentum that leads to way more total training time. I also explain what I'm really doing during those "rest periods" and why they're secretly some of the most valuable coaching moments for building hockey IQ. If you've ever struggled to get your kid to stick with at-home training, or if you're wondering whether these short sessions can actually make a difference, this one's for you. Takeaways: Why the best training is the training players will actually do How 10-minute sessions build consistency better than longer workouts The psychological advantage of "stacking" multiple short sessions Why rest periods are undercover Hockey IQ development How to make training feel fun instead of tedious What 10 minutes a day actually adds up to over a season
