The Athletic Hockey Show: Are the New York Rangers underrated?

Episode Description

Sean and Sean present what they learned this past week in the NHL with Gentille asking if the New York Rangers, the NHL's point leader are underrated, and DGB declares the playoffrace in the west is over and that the Nashville Predators should be taken seriously. Plus the guys wonder when the last time an offside challenge was lost, if the Columbus Blue Jackets are indeed one of the most hapless franchises in sports and if Johnny Gaudreau's contract is a bad one. They stick-tap Josh Doan who scored twice in his NHL debut for his hometown Arizona Coyotes and rejoice with the news that the missing Jaromir Jagr bobbleheads have been located! The Hockey Journey Podcast: Nontraditional Hockey Teaching w-Barry Karn & Karn Skating Dynamics EP132

Episode Description

Today is a treat for me, as I love when I can have our next guest, skating instructor extraordinaire Barry Karn on the show. He's one of our most popular guests here on the hockey journey podcast. After you're done with this episode, you can also check out numbers 12, 78 and 79 for a whole lot more of Barry Karn goodness. Recently, one of my other companies, Online Hockey Training started posting again , the Instagram, youtube and the facebook to mention a few after a good 2 year break. One category I like to highlight is the opposite hand training I have players work on and the benefits, but wanted a different, more catchy title, and then I remembered something Mr. Karn said; "disagreeable training!" I texted him, asking if he'd mind if I used the term, he proceeded to give me one of the longest texts I've ever received on disagreeable training and how it's such a critical ingredient in a kids childhood development. Right then and there, I said it's been too long, I don't know what the topic is going to be, but I need to get a little Barry Karn fix. So ladies and gentlemen, if you're ready to brave this trip with me here today, soon to be traveling through uncharted waters, well sit back, get comfy, settle in, put your tray table in it's upright and locked position, and get ready for a discussion on how one of the top skating instructor's in the world non traditionally teaches. Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderfully productive day! The Hockey Journey Podcast: Jackie Pieper Hockey Journey EP131

Episode Description

Welcome to Today's Episode! I'm excited to share with you the story of Jackie Pieper's incredible hockey journey today. It all started when a mom of one of the players I coach (who's a big fan of the podcast, by the way) suggested that Jackie would make an amazing guest. And wow, was she right! The Journey to the Top Jackie Pieper has truly climbed the hockey mountain, achieving her dream of playing college hockey. I'm eager to unpack her journey with you, starting from the very beginning. Jackie's passion for hockey was sparked early on by her mom, who shared her own love of the sport with her children. But as we all know, the road to success is rarely smooth. Jackie and her family faced their share of tough times, particularly when her older brother Duke, at just 15 years old, was given only a 5% chance to survive a serious health challenge. Continuing the Legacy But Jackie's impact on hockey didn't stop when she hung up her competitive skates. She's been inspiring the next wave of hockey talents, coaching various teams over the years and currently offering private small-group on-ice skills training. Beyond the ice, Jackie continues to make a difference as a speech pathologist, bringing her passion for helping others into another aspect of her life. If you're ready for a dose of inspiration, grab your favorite drink, and let's dive into a story that's sure to tug at your heartstrings. InGoal Radio: Parent Segment 3: The Net Pegs Keep Coming Off!

Episode Description

Weve all been there before. The net pegs wont hold. The other team gets angry. The opposing coaches yell and yes, even the fans start pointing finger, once again forgetting these are kids. The referee may try squirting some water on the pegs which makes no difference. After the net is dislodged a few more times, as the frustration in the building increases, the referee warns the goalie - one more time and I have to give you a penalty. Nevermind that it wasnt intentional, the referee succumbs to the pressure and takes it out on your kid. That happened 20 years ago and it happens even more today as goalies using modern post-integration techniques like the RVH are constantly pushing off the posts, controlling slides with them and even trying to use them for leverage to push up and elevate to cover the top of the net on sharp angle plays.Nobody likes to see their kid the centre of so much negative attention. We all see our young goalies are just trying to do their job.So what can you do?This week Woody and Hutch tackle this question from different angles.Woody, who is prone to the occasional bit of frustration, takes a preventative approach - there are peg systems that do a better job. Associations need to invest in them to let their goalies develop, playing the way the game is played.Hutch turns it into a mindset lesson for parents and goalies. While Woodys solution is a good one - it wont help you in the moment. There is nothing your anger and frustration can help. There is nothing you can do to stop fans from complaining, coaches from yelling or players from pointing fingers. And even if the referee is in the wrong on how they deal with your kid - again, there is nothing you can do that will help.So Hutch suggests that we all smile and move on. Its more than ignoring a problem, its turning that problem into an opportunity and knowing that your response will give you an advantage - and thats worth smiling about! He describes it as a goalie superpower for so many situations. If you get angry as a goalie then the others gain an advantage. Your focus moves from the puck and the play to the problem. And that is of no help when its time to make a save.BUT if you smile and see this as your opportunity then you gain the advantage. As the opposition gets upset they lose focus. As they see you smiling they will often respond by becoming more upset. And when you see that happening - youve got the edge. So enjoy it.And as a parent, while it takes a long time for you and your goalie to learn this important skill, you can start to smile because you know as others around you are growing impatient and angry - your goalie is smiling and loving the moment and the opportunity that they have. Its not easy to develop this skill. There will be times the net comes off and far too many seconds later it will go in and be called a good goal. Indeed Hutch mentions in this episode one such occasion where a net was off a full 14 seconds before what was called a good goal. And while its hard to smile and move on there - anger does nothing but hurt. But if you can put the problem behind you its a bit more reinforcement that your mental strength will set you apart from others and help you make the next save.Give it a try next time things feel like they are going sideways.Make smile and move on your goalie superpower.Have a listen and let us know your thoughts below. If you have a question youd like to hear us discuss, hit us up at parents@ingoalmag.com.
