3 Edge Drags Every Hockey Player Must Practice

Episode Description

Facts

Summary

The Downhill Skating System is the mechanics-first approach that unlocks effortless, controlled speed on the ice without extra conditioning, pushing or “trying harder.” Inspired by the movement signatures of players like Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes, and other elite NHL skaters, this system teaches you how to move on the ice with gravity, using your body's own stretch shortening cycles mixed with the most efficient footwork patterns and various skating mechanics.

Most players skate “uphill”: stiff, blocky, pushing hard, creating tension and burning energy like we were always taught in traditional powerskating. Downhill skating flips that model. By using counter rotation, proper joint angles, and natural gravitational momentum, we teach you move faster with less effort.

Inside the Downhill Skating System, players learn to:

1) Unlock the inner spring for better acceleration.

2)Use different footwork patterns to add options, deception and effortlessness.

3)Proper joint alignment for efficiency and balance instead of creating tension with push strides.

Apply NHL-base mechanics like shin angle, Y-angle, rhythm and cadence. Generate speed using the rocker, with heel pressure and subtle weight transfers.

This system is not what players would learn in traditional, outdated power skating methods. It’s a biomechanics-based operating system designed to match your body type and natural movement patterns.

Whether you’re trying to improve the forward stride, lateral movements, deception, or posture, Downhill Skating reveals the hidden mechanics the NHL’s best rely on, and shows you how to plug them into your game step by step.

If you’re ready to skate faster with less effort, flow through transitions, and move with the smoothness of the world’s best players, the Downhill Skating System is your blueprint to faster player development.

3 Things Mcdavid Does That Power Skating Coaches Never Teach

Episode Description

Facts

Summary

3 Things McDavid Does That Power Skating Coaches Never Teach

Everyone wants to skate like Connor McDavid and with all the miss-information on the internet it’s rarely taught what he is really doing to generate so much skating speed, which is the gap this week's video closes. We take three things that separate him from the other superstar skaters and put them side by side with what traditional power skating still teaches, and those differences are massive, because they better allow a player to skate downhill, loose, relaxed and effortless, instead of applying old powerskating methods and sub-optimal mechanics.

When you are not wasting energy with every stride, you don’t gas out as fast, which frees your brain up to make the next play or better see the ice and take what is given. It is not that these subtle differences looks different, it is that when the body is working so hard just to keep up to game speed you shut it down to optimizing play making and more specifically decision making.

Once you see it, you can't un-see it.

Here's a look at the Downhill Skating System and how you can start skating more like the world's best players:

tbl-Game Day! The Lightning Take On The Predators To Kick Off Their Preseason Campaign

Raw Charge
Facts

Summary

The first competitive shifts of the 2026-27 season will soon take to the ice as the Tampa Bay Lightning host the Nashville Predators at Benchmark International Arena this evening at 5:00 PM EST. With only four preseason games prior to the season starting, the Bolts are kicking things off with a NHL-veteran heavy line-up tonight. a look at the #Bolts lines and D pairings from their first morning skate of the preseason: Mikheyev – Point – Kucherov Hagel – Cirelli – Guentzel Geekie – O’Reilly – Rautiainen Kulebiakin – Czata – Sabourin Moser – Carlson Hedman – Crozier McDonagh – Cernak — Gabby Shirley (@Gabby_Shirley_) September 20, 2026 According to the Lightning’s daily group report, the goaltenders should be Andrei Vasilevskiy and Mads Sogaard. A quick glance at the line-up shows a defense and top-six that will likely mirror what we see on Opening night against the New York Rangers. Coach Jon Cooper isn’t messing around as he looks to establish some chemistry with his squad early on in training camp. At the same time, some players presumed to be on the roster bubble are getting a look with the top players. Oleg Kulebiakin and Scott Sabourin probably aren’t going to make the roster unless things really go off the rails. Benjamin Rautiainen and Sam O’Reilly are a couple of rookies whose chances increased with the injuries to Yanni Gourde and Dominic James while Ethan Czata might earn a shot for a few games with the big club before being assigned to his junior team. Seeing Ilya Mikheyev begin his Lightning career on the top line is intriguing. He has the wheels to play with Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov while giving them a little help in the defensive game. Could he find a role similar to Ondrej Palat as a two-way forward that can chip in enough offense to justify his spot on the line? Connor Geekie starts on the wing as he looks to lock in a permanent spot on the roster. LIke O’Reilly and Rautiainen, his chance to earn a spot became slightly easier with a couple of forwards out of service early in the season. Expect a little rotation on the defensive side, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Bolts try and keep J.J. Moser on his natural side after his strong season last year. Expect all three combinations to get similar ice time at 5v5 with John Carlson and Victor Hedman getting some extra time on the power play. Reports from the morning skate have Carlson, Brayden Point, Nikita Kucherov, Brandon Hagel, and Jake Guentzel working as a power play unit. The other unit was comprised of Hedman, Geekie, Rautiainen, O’Reilly, and Anthony Cirelli. There should be a pretty good pace to tonight’s game. One thing to remember is that NHL veterans are only allowed to play in two of the pre-season games, so expect the folks playing tonight to get the next one off and some of the Crunch players in camp to get some game time action. The cuts have already begun as the Lightning trimmed their camp roster by three players by releasing Jaxen Adam, Elliot Arnett, and Nathan Mayes from their try-out contracts. Their camp number sits at 64 with eleven days to go in camp. Our Kids Play Hockey: The Ride To The Rink: Why Great Teammates Have Uncomfortable Conversations With Bill Taylor

Facts

Summary

What do you do when a teammate wont pass the puck, you disagree with your coach, or you and your parents arent seeing hockey the same way?Conflict is part of every hockey season. The question isnt whether it will happenits whether youll have the courage and communication skills to handle it well.On this episode of The Ride to The Rink, Lee, Christie, Mike, and Bill Taylor of Sports Conflict Lab talk directly to young hockey players about one of the hardest skills to learn in sports: having uncomfortable conversations.Instead of complaining to someone else, avoiding the problem, or assuming another person has bad intentions, the crew explains why great teammates learn to go directly to the source, ask thoughtful questions, listen, and work toward a solution. In this episode, players will learn:Why talking directly to a teammate, coach, or parent is better than holding frustration insideHow asking questions can keep a difficult conversation from becoming an argumentWhy your teammate may not even realize their behavior is bothering youHow to approach conflict without accusing or attacking someoneWhy you should assume positive intentions before assuming the worstWhat to do when someone reacts defensivelyWhy one difficult conversation can still make an impacteven if nothing changes immediatelyHow parents and players can communicate about their different expectationsWhy being willing to have hard conversations is an important leadership skillHow to recognize when the uncomfortable conversation you need to have is actually with yourselfOne of the biggest lessons? You cant control how someone responds, but you can control how you approach the conversation.Sometimes your teammate might get defensive. Sometimes your coach may explain something you hadnt considered. Sometimes you may realize that you need to change, too.Thats part of growing as an athlete, a teammate, and a person. Want a written version you can reference anytime? Check out our companion blog: How Young Hockey Players Can Handle Conflict With Teammates, Coaches, and Parents Be brave. Ask questions. Our Kids Play Hockey: Why Healthy Conflict Makes Teams Stronger With Sports Conflict Lab Founder Ceo Bill Taylor

Facts

Summary

What if conflict isnt the problem in youth hockey but avoiding it is?Whether its a disagreement over playing time, tension between teammates, a frustrated parent, or an uncomfortable conversation with a coach, conflict is inevitable in sports. But according to Bill Taylor, founder of Sports Conflict Lab and author of Managing Sports Conflict: Five Tools to Master Conflict, learning how to handle those moments can actually make teams, relationships, and young athletes stronger. In this episode of Our Kids Play Hockey, Lee Elias, Mike Bonelli, and Christie Casciano-Burns sit down with Bill to explore why healthy conflict is essential for growthand why teams that never challenge one another may actually be limiting their potential. In this episode, youll hear: Why avoiding conflict usually makes the eventual problem bigger How healthy conflict can improve trust, communication, accountability, and team culture Why coaches should establish a conflict-resolution process before the season gets difficult The danger of three-way conflict when players or parents complain to everyone except the person involved Why parents should ask questions instead of immediately accusing or correcting How emotional regulation can completely change the outcome of a difficult conversation Why a 24-hour cooling-off period can help parents and coaches communicate more effectively The difference between hearing someone and actually practicing active listening How genuine apologies can repair trust after a coach, parent, or player makes a mistake Why curiosity is more productive than judgment during conflict How parents can accidentally rob their kids of important life skills by solving every disagreement for them Why championship-level teams often become stronger by learning how to work through uncomfortable moments togetherOne of the biggest takeaways from Bill is simple: conflict is not a battle to winits a problem to solve. When athletes learn to manage their emotions, speak directly to teammates, listen before reacting, and work through disagreement, they arent just becoming better hockey players. Theyre building communication and relationship skills they can carry for the rest of their lives. Bill Taylor is the founder and CEO of Sports Conflict Lab and the author of Managing Sports Conflict: Five Tools to Master Conflict. Learn more about Bills work, conflict-management education, and resources at SportsConflictLab.com.If youre a hockey parent, coach, or team leader, this is an episode worth sharing with your entire hockey community. tbl-Lightning Morning News: Last Friday Before The Games Begin!

Raw Charge
Facts

Summary

Today is the last Friday without Lightning hockey until at least April, hopefully all the way until the middle of June. Let’s check out some headlines around the NHL. Lightning News: The Lightning got some unfortunate news that Yanni Gourde and Dominic James will not be with the team to start the season. However, that opens the door for some young talent to make a name for themselves this preseason. [ Raw Charge ] Another day closer to the regular season and there doesn’t seem to be any positive news regarding a Nikita Kucherov extension in Tampa. General Manager Julien BriseBois had a lot to say the last few days and his comments did not do much to sooth Lightning fan’s worries. [ Raw Charge ] Here’s the information on the injuries to Gourde and James. Gourde is out until December and James is out for the first several weeks of the season according to BriseBois. [ Daily Faceoff ] Those recent injuries at forward gave BriseBois an opportunity to give old friend Luke Glendening a call for a Professional Tryout Contract. He last played with the Lightning from 2023-25. [ NHL ] Along with their regular stadium giveaway promotions, the Lightning are running some special ticket package nights with exclusive items. Who doesn’t need a pirate boat themed gravy boat? [ Lightning Twitter feed ] League News: The biggest news that sent waves throughout the hockey world the last few days was that Connor Hellebuyck has decided to not show up for training camp in Winnipeg, resulting in the Jets suspending the disgruntled netminder. [ ESPN ] Brad Marchand will be out with injury until at least the end of October. *Sad trombone* The 38 year old is in year 2 of a 6 year deal in Florida. [ Daily Faceoff ] In something that was more of a formality than breaking news, the Los Angeles Kings have named Drew Doughty their newest captain after Anze Kopitar retired at the end of last season. [ LA Times ] Long time NHL enforcer Ryan Reaves has decided to hang up his skates and retire from the NHL. Reaves played in 962 games across 16 seasons, scoring 66 goals and recording 140 points while racking up an impressive 1,137 penalty minutes. [ Sportsnet ] Thanks for stopping by today, be sure to check back later for the latest Lightning news!

This Is Why You Struggle With Skating Backwards

If you’re ready to skate faster with less effort, flow through transitions, and move with the smoothness of the world’s best players, the Downhill Skating System is your blueprint to faster player development.

tbl-Brisebois’ Update On Contract Negotiations Points To Cloudy Future

Raw Charge
Facts

Summary

The Tampa Bay Lightning open up camp today and the good news is that everyone who is healthy should be on the ice. That can’t be said for every team (cough, Winnipeg , cough). Due to a couple of injuries, there are some questions that need to be answered in terms of the roster, but the biggest organizational question remains the same from July – what is going on with Nikita Kucherov? A small, somewhat consequential deadline passed earlier this week when the new memorandum of understanding between the league and players’ union kicked in on September 16. Under the new terms that extend the CBA, the Lightning can no longer offer Kucherov an eight-year extension. They can still give him more years than any other team, but the cap is now seven. That isn’t as big of a deal for Kucherov as it was for some of the younger players in the league (which is why we saw a flurry of deals over the last couple of day) as it’s unlikely the future All-Star will keep playing for eight more seasons. What it does constrict is the number of years the Lightning could spread a deal out over to lessen the yearly cap hit. Shaving one year off isn’t a huge impediment, but with some other players soon needing extensions, every dollar against the cap counts. One of the other “loopholes” that has been eliminated under the new CBA is deferred payments. Whatever the two sides agree to has to paid out over the life of the deal. For an older player like Kucherov, that might have had some enticement as he could keep cashing large checks even after he stopped playing. The third big difference is the capping of bonus money at 60% of the total value of new contracts. Previously, players could opt to get the majority of their bag in the form of signing or roster bonuses and then play for a minimal salary. The advantage was that they would get paid in bulk up front and the payments were essentially lock-out proof. If there was a work stoppage, they were still getting paid. Under the new layout, they can still get more than half of their money in the form of those bonuses, but it will be slightly more balanced. The changes don’t dramatically affect what Kucherov is going to get paid on his next deal, but they also don’t make the negotiations any easier. Kucherov and general manager Julien BriseBois both spoke with the media, and the most positive thing we can draw from what they said is that the two sides are still talking. At least we’re not at the “tabling conversations until after the season” point yet. For his part Kucherov shrugged off any direct comments about the negotiations, stating that he just wants to focus on playing hockey. So, it was left to Mr. BriseBois to provide an update about the state of negotiations. “Throughout these contract negotiations, both parties I know would prefer to have a deal today to put that behind us. We haven’t been able to do that. I’m still in touch with his agent to keep the lines of communication open with the goal being to get Nikita signed to a contract that will keep him in Tampa many years to come.” He also acknowledged that Kucherov is a unique player coming off of a historic run (most points by a player through their age 30-32 seasons in the history of the NHL), and that there is no expectation that the level of production is going to wane any time soon. Mr. BriseBois then shut down any further talk about negotiations, stating that it would do no good for him to say what the progress looks like at this point. He also warned the press that he wouldn’t be providing regular updates, basically stating that once a decision is made he’ll let them know. Forgive Lightning fans if the general manager’s words raise an eyebrow or two. After all, they’ve heard these words before. In fact, it wasn’t too long ago when Mr. BriseBois uttered this statement about another franchise icon, “The aim is for him to continue to play on a contending Tampa Bay Lightning team going forward.” We all know how that turned out. Sorry to bring some bad memories back in regards to Steven Stamkos, but that’s what the general manager said in May of 2024 following another first-round exit for the Bolts. While it’s unlikely Kucherov heads to Smashville to join Stamkos, the chances of him wearing a different uniform crept up just a little. Are we in full-blown panic mode yet? No, not really. If we had a scale of 1-5 on the Kuchpocalypse scale we’ve moved from a 0.50 to a 1.25. In our hearts and minds we feel like this is going to get done. If this situation gets to the trade deadline without resolution, then we will ratchet that number up quite a bit. During his question-and-answer session with the assembled media, Mr. BriseBois did concede that the rising cap and escalating salaries has pretty much affected all contract negotiations. But he also acknowledged that every situation is different and teams have different financial opportunities and stages of development. The overall factor that will decide this contract situation is how big of a financial pill is Julien BriseBois willing and able to swallow to keep Nikita Kucherov on the roster. In the past, we speculated that anything under $15 million should be a no-brainer. However, when the very general manager that is trying to sign Kucherov acknowledges that his player is elite, and ever expectation is that he will stay that way for the near future, he’s going to have to sign a deal that reflects that. With the way the summer has gone, that might mean a six- or seven-year deal in the $17 million range. It would have been wonderful if this had been resolved on July 1 just to remove it as a potential source of distraction for the team. On the ice, things should be okay. It’s unlikely to affect the way Kucherov performs on the ice, and for the next few months that is really all that matters.
