The NHL just cut every coach's runway in half.

Six practices. Four preseason games. No mandatory fitness testing. Anyone with 100+ NHL games capped at two exhibitions. That's the entire camp under the new CBA — and you've got to install a forecheck, a neutral zone, a breakout, a power play, a penalty kill, and find out what your rookies are, before the games start counting.

\n

And it happened in the one year where almost nobody in this league knows who they are yet.

\n

Here's the part nobody's talking about: this doesn't hurt everybody the same. Carolina stood pat and led the league in offensive zone time five years running — they don't need six practices to remember what they are. Florida gets Barkov and both Tkachuks back healthy. Those teams walk into October with a massive head start.

\n

It's the new coaches it hurts. And it murders prospects.

\n

I'm a Hockey Canada high performance coach. I've built season after season at the AA, Western Canadian Games and junior levels — and the NHL is bigger, faster, harder, and they're doing it with a third of the time I got.

\n

Three to five fall out every year, so there's a door. But that's the window.

Roughly twenty games to establish who you are. Same door. Same date. Half the runway.

\n

So when your team starts 3-6 and everybody says it's early — it's not early anymore. It's the shortest October this league has ever run.

That's what this tier list actually measures. Not who's good — who needs less to go right. Because to win a Cup in June you have to be healthy, things have to break correctly, and you have to be able to manage your way out of your own problems. Every team has problems. Some just have fewer than others.

All 32 teams, ranked for 2026-27. For each one: what wins them games, what ends their season, and where they land. The tier comes last, after I've told you what kills them.

Priced entirely off the 2025-26 season and the 2026 offseason. Nothing carried over from older years. Sixteen teams make the playoffs, so exactly sixteen sit in the top three tiers.

You have no idea if your team is a contender or a hostage. And the big contract your team just signed isn't going to tell you either.

In this video I'm breaking down the one number that actually predicts Stanley Cup winners, and it's not the star's contract. It's what's left after it.

\n

I pulled every Cup winner from 2012 to 2026. The highest single cap hit on any of those rosters was Evgeni Malkin at just over 13 percent in 2017. Ovechkin in 2018 at 12.72 percent. That's the ceiling across fifteen championships.

\n

Now Cale Makar is signing for 20.4 million a year. Makar and MacKinnon together at 29.1 percent of the projected 2027-28 cap. Chicago had Toews and Kane at 29.4 percent in 2015-16. Chicago has not won a playoff series since.

\n

Same math. Different decade. Different franchise.

\n

Connor Hellebuyck asked out of Winnipeg. Publicly, with his name on it. And every hockey show in North America is about to ask the wrong question.

\n

They'll ask what the Jets can get for him. That's not the question. The question is why a team that won the Presidents' Trophy eighteen months ago is starting a negotiation from the worst position it has ever been in.

\n

A small market team has exactly two jobs. Maximize value on the way in. Exit at peak value on the way out. Winnipeg is very good at one of those, and this is the fifth time we've watched them fail the other.

\n

In this breakdown a certified Hockey Canada High Performance coach goes through the actual contract — seven years, $59.5 million, $8.5 million cap hit, a full no-movement clause that converts to a ten-team list in 2027-28. The .895 save percentage and the 34-goal collapse in goals saved above expected that sets the trade price. And the pattern that runs from Toby Enstrom and Andrew Ladd through Trouba, Laine, Ehlers, and now Hellebuyck.

\n

The argument nobody in Winnipeg is making: the belief that a small, cold, heavily taxed market has to protect relationships above all else is exactly backwards. The fear of being a small market creates the behaviour that makes being a small market fatal. You can't relationship your way out of a market problem. You can only asset-manage your way out.

\n

Kevin Cheveldayoff is a good trader. His trades grade well. The failure isn't the deal — it's the runway to the deal. And the return on Hellebuyck will probably be fine. That was never the problem. Peak value was eighteen months ago, and everyone in that building knew it.

\n

Carolina set the blueprint. Draft, develop, trade, sign, and cut — all at the right time. Don't let them get to the end.

\n

It's time for Winnipeg to find its courage.

\n

Most fans watch the puck on a power play. That's exactly why most fans are frustrated by power plays.

\n

The puck isn't where the power play happens. The power play happens in the seam nobody is watching — in the choice a defender has to make, in the read a quarterback makes before anyone else in the building sees it, in the gap a team attacks before the penalty kill even has time to set up.

\n

In this video a certified Hockey Canada High Performance coach breaks down exactly how the NHL power play works — from the faceoff to the breakout to the three systems to the quarterback who makes it all go.

\n

Chapter 1 — Why the best power plays try to score before they even set up. Win the draw and go. Lose the draw, break out fast and attack the gap in the first seven seconds before the goalie has his eyes and the penalty kill has its structure.

\n

Chapter 2 — The three systems. The 2-3 Spread. The 1-3-1. The Umbrella. What each one is trying to force and why the best power plays shift between all three in the same two minutes. Plus the 5-on-3 — when the structure changes completely and the math breaks down in your favor.

Chapter 3 — The quarterback. The most important player nobody is watching. Shayne Gostibehere — acquired by Carolina for a third round pick — quarterbacked the best power play in the Stanley Cup Final. Three choices every time he touched the puck at the top. Shoot. Carolina just won the Stanley Cup. And the lesson everyone is about to get wrong is copy what they did.

That's not the lesson.

\n

Carolina didn't win because they found a clever system. They won because they chose hard when easy was sitting right there in front of them — and when easy wasn't available at all, they built their entire identity around the only door that was open.

\n

Man coverage and an aggressive forecheck the whole league said wouldn't survive a real test. A shutdown defenseman as the identity piece instead of a point producing offensive defenseman. Rod Brind'Amour over 50 years old still conditioning harder than his roster. Trading Mikko Rantanen — a true elite talent — because fit mattered more than the name on the jersey. Staying with Aho and Svechnikov through years of people saying they'd go quiet when it mattered. Finding Logan Stankoven when the league laughed at the trade. Claiming Brandon Bussi off waivers when he'd never played an NHL game.

\n

Jake Guentzel left. Mitch Marner said no with his no movement clause. Rantanen walked. The easy path never existed for Carolina. So they stopped looking for it.

\n

And the question for every team watching isn't how do we do what Carolina did. It's what is the hard thing only we can build — and do we have the patience to let it lose in the Eastern Conference Final three times before it wins the whole thing.
