A tight turn and a punch turn are not the same mechanic in hockey, and most players only ever get coached on how to do one of them leaving them with a deficiency in their mechanical toolbox.
Tight turns keep both edges on the ice with no crossover or crossunder, so you change direction with a collapse of the ankles and sitting into your turning side hip. Punch turns are for scrubbing speed by shaving through the ice with your outside edge are more used to shake a defender and pull up fast.
In this video we cover the coaching cues for both, including the one that feels wrong at first: letting your ankles collapse and roll while you keep your shin angle and your head up of crouse. That is what the best skaters in the NHL are able to do to lose opponents, gain time and space and make more plays with the puck.
Here's a look at the Downhill Skating System and how you can start skating more like the world's best players:

The Downhill Skating System is the mechanics-first approach that unlocks effortless, controlled speed on the ice without extra conditioning, pushing, or "trying harder." Inspired by the movement signatures of Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes, and other elite NHL skaters, it teaches you to move with gravity, using your body's own stretch shortening cycles alongside efficient footwork and skating mechanics.
By using counter rotation, proper joint angles, and natural momentum, you move faster with less effort.
Inside Train 2.0+ you'll learn to:
- Unlock the inner spring for better acceleration.
- Use direction changes that keep you deceptive and hold your optionality.
- Build NHL superstar mechanics, instead of repatterning the wrong movements.
- Turn these mechanics into in game assets, completely changing your player DNA and development trajectories.
