Episode Description
Summary
Nikita Kucherov called today’s NHL “very dumb. Low IQ.” He’s right, and it’s not because the players can’t think. We spent twenty years teaching every kid to be creative, and now they’re all creative the exact same way.
I’m a Hockey Canada High Performance coach, and in this video I freeze the tape and call the play before it happens: the forecheck, the D-zone, the power play. Then I break down why Kucherov is bored and how the academy pipeline builds NHL players in a lab, using Gavin McKenna’s path from Whitehorse to first overall. Then the receipts. Shots are down to a post-lockout low, shooting percentage is at its highest, the power plays and the chaos are gone, and the middle of the standings keeps shrinking. Finally, why the Carolina Hurricanes won the Cup by being different. So here’s the question for your team: is your best young player a thinker, or just a great swing?
FREE STUDY: Coach Ryan’s Same Swing Study. It has every number from this video with sources, and the whole NHL playbook on three pages: three D-zones, three forechecks and three power plays.
